Montgomery, AL (June 14, 2017)- This week Coach David Burkette is hosting his annual Summer Co-Ed Basketball Camp at Connecting Life Sports and Family Resource Center. The camp is designed for youth ages 5-12.
Coach Burkette had a vision to start a camp for children with financial hardships who had a desire to participate in sports. Over twenty years later, the camp is still operating at full capacity. Coach Burkette says the camp has grown tremendously over the years. This year, a total of 137 students are registered. “This is an amazing program. Doors are open and no child is turned away” says Mary Boone who volunteers with the camp. “So many children are here to benefit from what the Coach has to offer.”
JaMychal Green, Power Forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, is in town assisting with the camp. A Montgomery Native, Green first joined the camp when he was 8 years old. “The camp taught me a lot of discipline and to be coachable at any level” he shared. Green is a graduate of St. Jude Educational Institute and University of Alabama.
The Montgomery Police Department also visited the camp. Sgt. Mackey and Sgt. Wise spoke the group about obedience. “Do what you are told by your parents” Sgt. Mackey shared. “You are going to have to obey people your whole life.”
